8 Biggest Issues Facing All Companies - Issue #6: Inconsistent communication

Last year we produced more information than in the previous 5,000 years and ways of accessing this information are also rapidly growing. The amount of new technical information is doubling every 2 years and shows no signs of slowing down. This is a fitting topic for the week with all the recent feedback regarding companies not communicating to their teams effectively.

By the end of 2012, the typical worker will receive hundreds of messages each day via email, IM, text, tweets and social networks. Trying to get people’s attention is next to impossible now. Trying to get information to every employee in an organisation is a lot like trying to control kids on a school bus:

  • Some will listen.
  • Some will hear but misunderstand.
  • Some will ignore it altogether and later complain, ‘But nobody told me’.

This challenge is further complicated in organisations with a global presence and geographically dispersed locations. Most corporate communications will grab the attention of an employee for no more than a few seconds, if at all.

Executives are already overwhelmed. Senior executives lose about two hours per day to unnecessary interruptions such as instant messaging, spam email, telephone calls and the web. Once we are interrupted, it takes an average of 25 minutes to return to a task. Forty per cent of the time, workers then wander off in a new direction. This information overload is estimated to cost the US economy $900 billion per year in lowered productivity and innovation.

We have 5 interviews conducted on top franchising and retail companies on the subject of consistent communication.
